Opening Prayer

You love generosity, don’t You, Good God!!!! The sacrificing generosity of the widows of Zarephath and Jerusalem touch Your heart and copy Your generous love. Teach us to be people of generous justice. We so easily give of our abundance so that we hardly notice. Inspire us to follow Jesus in his self-emptying service and to give in a way that hurts, is experienced, and even smarts a bit. Jesus once and for all entered the sanctuary of Your heart and connected us with Your generous Spirit. Let Your Spirit live in us, and transform us to work for justice. In Spirit us with the Spirit of sacrifice that acknowledges that all resources are gifts from Your hand and are to be shared by the whole people. Save us from hoarding and unnecessary self-protection. Give us the spirit of these generous widows whose hearts are open even as they were broken by disappointments in life. Purify us that we do not give you endless words and pious devotions without working for justice for your most oppressed and alienated and hungry children. Stretch our hearts with Your generosity, Good God!
