Discovering the Jubilee Year: A Time of Grace and Renewal

WHAT IS A JUBILEE YEAR?
A Jubilee Year is a special period in the life of the Church dedicated to spiritual renewal, reconciliation, and a deeper encounter with God. Rooted in Scripture (see Leviticus 25), a Jubilee traditionally involved the forgiveness of debts, the return of land, and the restoration of relationships among people and with creation.

2025: PILGRIMS OF HOPE
The upcoming Jubilee Year, themed Pilgrims of Hope, invites us to embrace the hope found in Christ and to become beacons of hope for others. This year, all are called to renew their faith, seek reconciliation, and live as signs of God’s mercy in the world.

HOLY DOORS AND PILGRIMAGE
A central symbol of the Jubilee is the Holy Door, which pilgrims are invited to pass through as a sign of spiritual renewal and conversion. Walking through the Holy Door represents leaving behind old ways and stepping into a new life with God. While the official Holy Doors are located in Rome, many churches and shrines doors symbolize this powerful tradition.

WHAT IS A JUBILEE INDULGENCE?
An indulgence is the Church’s way of expressing God’s mercy by removing the temporal consequences of sins already forgiven through confession. It is a gift of grace that purifies the soul, drawing on the merits of Christ and the communion of saints. By fulfilling certain conditions—confession, Communion, prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and detachment from sin—the faithful can receive this special grace as part of their Jubilee journey.

The Jubilee Prayer

Father in heaven,

may the faith you have given us

in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,

and the flame of charity enkindled

in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,

reawaken in us the blessed hope

for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us

into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.

May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos

in the sure expectation

of a new heaven and a new earth,

when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,

your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee

reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,

a yearning for the treasures of heaven.

May that same grace spread

the joy and peace of our Redeemer

throughout the earth.

To you our God, eternally blessed,

be glory and praise for ever.

Amen
