Opening Prayer

God of History, like the Egyptians we sometimes persecute, enslave and destroy people who threaten us. Save us today from this self destructive instinct and devastating violence we impose on others by thought, attitude, judgment, behavior or silence. We believe that You will ultimately bring glory and freedom from their bondage and oppression, but so much violence will hurt so many. Why do You test us amid suffering and misunderstanding? Jesus sent his beloved into conflict and confusion. I guess we are always looking for a peaceful rose garden. Teach us to be warmed by Your fire and inSpirited by Your passion without destroying or demeaning others. Too many of Your sons and daughters are being drowned in the wrath of righteousness. Save us from ourselves, God of History, God of this Present Moment.
