Time with Therese: Secrecy of the soul

May 2, 2016 06:00 AM

“Oh, how well I know that happiness is not found in the things around us. It is found in the secrecy of the soul.”
-From Story of a Soul

St. Therese wrote this in her autobiography, Story of a Soul. Our Little Flower was reflecting on the pilgrimage she took to Rome with her father and sister, Celine. It was during the trip to Rome that St. Therese asked Pope Leo XII if she could become a Carmelite early at age 15. During this trip, the Martins and the other pilgrims were staying in elaborate hotels. Therese realized that the other people on the trip were more concerned with worldly things than with God.

St. Therese understood where happiness and joy is found. It is not found in status or possessions, it is found in knowing God’s love and trusting in Him completely. God does not expect anything elaborate, He yearns for His children to love and trust Him simply.
